plans to spend nearly $1 millionn in federal economic stimulus money on improvingthe city’x housing stock and training peoplre to do lead abatement. Mayof Jerry Jennings said the city will spendaboutr $546,000 to demolish 12 to 14 blighted buildings throughoutg the city and stabilize two historicf structures in the Arbor Hill neighborhood. Aboutf $400,000 will be spent on renovating anabandoned three-story buildinh on Morton Avenue and a property on North Swan Street, in conjunctioh with the Albany Housing Authority. Both buildings have been vacan formany years. The city will also spend up to $50,00 to train and certify about 30 peoples to dolead abatement.
They will then be eligibl e to bid on lead abatemen t projects inthe city. The trainingy will be done by the . “These projects meet the intenf of the American Recoverty and Reinvestment Act and our neighborhoodplanningy efforts,” Jennings said. “By leveragintg these resources and addressingf abandonment inour community, our quality of life will improve.”
