From July to September, 6 percent of the companies interviewed in the Honoluliu metro area plan to hiremore employees, whilwe 11 percent expect to reduce their payrolls, according to the survey from Milwaukee-based (NYSE: MAN). Seventy-eighf percent expect to maintain their current stafd levels and 5 percenyt remain uncertain abouthiring plans. Hirint is expected to be a little lighter than in theseconxd quarter, when 10 percent of companies surveyed plannedf to hire and 12 percent expected to cut payrolls, said Manpower spokeswoman Mary Lou Callahan. Employers in durable goods manufacturing, nondurable goods manufacturing, professional and business services, educatiohn and health services and governmenrt intend tocut staffing. Hiring in transportation and utilities, financial activitiesw and other services is expected toremainj unchanged. National survey results showed littlr change from the second Of the morethan 28,000 employers surveyed across the country, 15 percengt expect to increase their staff levels during the thircd quarter, while 13 percent expect to reduce theirf payrolls. Sixty-seven percent expect no change in hiring and 5 percent are undecider abouttheir third-quarter hiring plans.
“The data shows continued hesitancyamong employers,” said Jonas Prising, president of the Americaes for Manpower. “They are treading slowly and watchingv withguarded optimism, hoping a few quarters of stabilitu will be the precursor to the recovery.”
